Sunscreen has a beach problem. Somewhere along the way, it became something we associate exclusively with holidays, pool days, and the occasional outdoor brunch. The rest of the time? Optional. In Dubai, this mindset is genuinely damaging your skin every single day, and the consequences build up quietly over years before they become impossible to ignore.
Here's the real story on SPF in this city.
Dubai's UV index is not normal
To put it in perspective: a UV index of 3 is considered moderate and warrants sun protection in most guidelines. Dubai regularly hits 10 to 12 during summer months, the maximum on the standard scale, classified as extreme. On some days it goes higher. This isn't a city where you need sunscreen when you're spending time outside. It's a city where UV exposure is happening to you whether you're outside or not.
UVA rays, the ones responsible for premature ageing, pigmentation, and long-term skin damage, penetrate glass. Your office window. Your car windscreen. The floor-to-ceiling windows in your apartment. If light is reaching your skin, UVA is reaching your skin. SPF is not optional in Dubai. It is the baseline.
"UVA rays penetrate glass. Your commute, your office, your apartment — they all count as sun exposure in Dubai."
What SPF in your makeup actually does (and doesn't do)
SPF 20 in your foundation sounds reassuring. The reality is that to achieve the stated protection, you'd need to apply roughly seven times the amount of foundation most people use. Nobody does that. The SPF in your makeup is not your sun protection strategy, it's a bonus at best.
A dedicated broad-spectrum SPF 50, applied as the last step of your skincare routine and before makeup, is the standard. Broad-spectrum means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks around 98% of UVB rays, meaningfully more than SPF 30, which blocks around 97%. In Dubai's UV conditions, that difference matters.
The SPF mistakes most people make
Not using enough. The recommended amount for the face is about half a teaspoon — more than most people apply. If you're using a light layer, you're getting a fraction of the stated protection.
Not reapplying. SPF degrades with sun exposure, sweat, and touch. If you're outdoors or near windows, reapplication every two hours is the standard. SPF setting sprays make this easier without disturbing makeup.
Skipping it on cloudy days. Up to 80% of UV rays pass through cloud cover. Overcast Dubai days still require SPF.
Only applying to the face. Your neck, décolletage, and hands age faster than almost anywhere else on your body because they're constantly exposed and consistently forgotten. Extend your SPF beyond your face.
SPF and your treatment results
This one matters specifically if you're getting regular facials. Any treatment that involves exfoliation — including a HydraFacial — temporarily makes your skin more sensitive to UV. Skipping SPF in the days after a treatment undoes a significant portion of what the treatment achieved and can trigger post-inflammatory pigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones.
Think of SPF as the thing that protects your investment. The treatment clears, hydrates, and renews — SPF makes sure that work lasts.
