You cleanse in the morning, moisturise, apply SPF, and by midday you're looking greasy. Sound familiar? Oily skin by midday is one of the most common skin complaints in Dubai, and while it's easy to blame your skin type, the reality is more nuanced. Your skin is actually trying to tell you something. Here's how to read it.
It's usually not about having oily skin
This is the part that surprises most people. Midday oiliness is often not a skin type issue — it's a skin barrier issue. When your barrier is compromised or your skin is dehydrated, it overproduces sebum to compensate. So the oiliness you're experiencing by noon might actually be your skin's response to being under-hydrated, over-cleansed, or stripped by the wrong products.
In Dubai, this cycle is incredibly common. Harsh foaming cleansers strip the skin in the morning, the AC dehydrates it further throughout the day, and the skin responds by pumping out oil to try to protect itself. By midday, you're shiny — but your skin is actually crying out for moisture, not mattifying powder.
What your midday oil is actually telling you
Oily all over by 11am? Your cleanser is probably too harsh. If your face feels squeaky clean after washing, that's not a good sign — it means you've stripped your natural oils, and your skin is in overdrive trying to replace them.
Oily T-zone only? Classic combination skin response to dehydration. Your T-zone has more sebaceous glands and overcompensates fastest. The fix is hydration, not more oil control.
Oily after applying moisturiser? Your moisturiser is probably too heavy for Dubai's climate. A thick cream designed for dry winters creates a seal on top of your skin that traps heat and triggers more oil production. Switch to a lightweight gel formula.
Gets oilier in summer specifically? Heat directly stimulates sebum production. This is normal — but it means your summer routine needs to be different from your winter one. Lighter products, more frequent gentle cleansing, and regular professional deep cleans to stop congestion building up.
"Oily skin by midday is often dehydrated skin in disguise. The fix is more hydration, not more mattifying."
What to actually do about it
Switch to a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Cream or micellar cleansers in the morning preserve your barrier while removing overnight product. Keep the deeper cleanse for the evening.
Layer a hydrating serum under a lightweight moisturiser. Hyaluronic acid serum followed by a gel moisturiser gives your skin the water it needs without triggering more oil. When your skin is properly hydrated, it stops overcompensating.
Blotting papers, not powder. If you need to manage shine during the day, blotting papers remove oil without layering more product on top. Powder on top of oil on top of SPF on top of moisturiser is a congestion recipe.
Reset regularly. Weekly professional treatments that include deep cleansing and hydration infusion address both sides of the problem — removing the congestion that's already there and flooding the skin with hydration so it stops overproducing.
